At 17 years old, Ryan Kopf knows about ambition. The Muscatine Community College freshman already has 29 college credits under his belt, and he juggles time between school and a part-time job.
Kopf has quickly gained the attention of some pretty big players on the Muscatine business scene, embarking upon an endeavor designed to make Muscatine more attractive to area teenagers. ‘People my age complain that there’s nothing to do. Most of my friends say they have to go out of town to do anything,’ he said.
On Saturday, Chrono Game Center will open in the basement of Pearl Plaza, across from Port City Underground. The new business, Kopf said, will offer video game activities, Web browsing and card games. It’s something he hopes will entice area youth to downtown. Kopf believes his game store is a nice alternative to some of Muscatine’s other attractions, such as the bowling alley and the Muscatine Community Y.
The idea started when Kopf and a friend, Matt Naber, began brainstorming ideas for exciting things for youth to do within the community. ‘We suggested a video game store. Everyone I talked to said it it sounded great.’
‘He saw a need in the community for a place for older teens to be able to congregate and actually enjoy computer games,’ said Jane Daufeldt, executive director of the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry. ‘He went about designing a business that would meet those needs,’ she added.
