Young Adults are Creating Jobs Right for Them.

The Hamilton Spectator:
They want to work their own hours, wear jeans on the job and be their own boss - even if it means setting up the company office in their parents’ basement.

Young adults are rebelling against climbing the corporate ladder and enduring the structured 9-to-5 office jobs their baby boomer parents work. Instead, this generation is about creating a job that’s right for them. ‘It’s a generation that likes to be their own boss and follow their own rules,’ said Benjamin Tal, senior economist with CIBC World Markets.

With baby boomers refusing to retire and the Internet providing the key to a world of entrepreneurship, these techno-savvy young adults are starting up their own businesses in droves.

The number of 15- to 24-year-olds choosing the path of entrepreneurship has grown 13 times faster than the rest of the population over the past 2 years.

And a booming market for service-based businesses is providing the perfect opportunity for these young entrepreneurs. ‘You can start up a consulting firm in about 10 seconds,’ said Marvin Ryder, who teaches the entrepreneurship course at McMaster University. ‘You can run it out of a home and you don’t need a licence or significant capital.’

Staying at home with your parents also makes it easier to run your own company. Many of these business-minded young adults have the safety net of their parents’ support when starting up their own company, often running it out of the basement.

‘Parents aren’t forcing their children out on their own,’ Ryder said. ‘So they can take a chance on entrepreneurship.’
