They’ll be the hit of their high school’s homecoming ceremony at halftime, but they’re not the homecoming court - they’re the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
A group of students from Santa Monica High School in California are being recognized for taking home the top prize in an international business competition held in Shanghai. The competition was sponsored by Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE).
It’s a nonprofit program that teaches high school students around the globe how to succeed in business and in life. What did the Santa Monica group do to stand out? They developed marketing plans and products for their high school’s student-run retail and food operations, which increased sales by 34% last school year. They beat out teams from 7 other countries to bring home the honors.
Not only does SAGE stress entrepreneurial skills in the workplace, it also strives to make high-school students more active in their communities. For example, the Santa Monica students met their community service requirements for SAGE by creating a ‘Kookies for Katrina’ fundraiser that accumulated $3,000 for the Red Cross.
SAGE is part of a growing trend of organizations working to foster entrepreneurial skills in teens, including Junior Achievement, which was founded back in 1919, and a newer group, Food From the ‘Hood, which started at a LA high school after the riots in 1992. These groups clearly demonstrate that there’s no age limit to entrepreneurship.
