Press of Atlantic City:
In the latest incarnation of a fabled but faded Atlantic City landmark, the Steel Pier will be redeveloped by Donald Trump’s casino company for luxury condominiums jutting hundreds of feet out over the ocean.
Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. is transforming the century-old pier into condos or possibly a condo-hotel to complement the gaming operations of its flagship Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort across the Boardwalk.
Steel Pier’s makeover will include some retail attractions, but probably not the type of high-end stores that occupy the $200 million Pier at Caesars. Trump and his top executives said they were wary about adding upscale shops to their project in light of the ’spotty’ performance of The Pier following its grand opening in the summer.
‘Retail has always been very tough in Atlantic City if you’re on a pier,’ Trump said. ‘Thus far, the results at the pier that just opened are spotty at best.’
James B. Perry, president and chief executive officer of Trump Entertainment, expressed doubts that swanky retail shops would be the right mix for the Steel Pier’s redevelopment plans.
