Young Entrepreneur Sets Up Shop

Most people don’t decide on their life’s work until college. But 10-year-old Trey Carraway (photo), who splits his time between Wrightsville Beach and Landfall, has already decided what he wants to do for a living.

In fact, he’s already started his own small business, Breakers by Trey - selling homemade hemp jewelry pieces.

The 4th-grade student at St. Mark Catholic School, in Wilmington, 1st got started making the jewelry while attending Camp Sea Gull in Arapahoe over the summer.

‘I went to Creative Arts and I never knew how to do it,’ he says. ‘I saw some people doing it and asked how they do it, and they showed me. And then I learned how to do it a little better.’

After he returned from camp, Trey received a letter encouraging him to participate in a Camp Sea Gull program called Cabins for Others, a scholarship fund for children who otherwise would be unable to attend the camp. Each camper is encouraged to raise at least $25.

In Trey’s case, he decided to sell the hemp jewelry, and made more than $400.

Since then, he has made hundreds of pieces of the jewelry, from key chains to necklaces, anklets, bracelets, earrings and belts.

After making pieces for family and friends in his spare time, and donating the proceeds to Cabins for Others, Trey made his 1st sales to strangers at the Festival in the Park, held in conjunction with the N.C. Holiday Flotilla in November.

Now, he’s proud to announce ‘We’re going to start selling it at my dad’s restaurant’ - that being his father Stanley’s well-known Two Guys Grille, located on Wrightsville Avenue just across the drawbridge from Wrightsville Beach.

‘I’m excited for him,’ his father says. ‘I think it’s a good experience for him; he’s a young entrepreneur.’ Story continues here…
