For entrepreneurs and small-business owners, 2006 brought continued anxiety over health care and fuel prices, measured optimism, and job growth.
This was a year in which Hector Barreto stepped down as the head of the embattled Small Business Administration and Steven Preston, a former corporate executive, took the reins. It was also a year in which the fastest-growing small-business sectors were among women and minority entrepreneurs, according to U.S. Census Bureau numbers. In the end, however, it was business as usual, which meant that tens of thousands of new ideas were turned into full-fledged startups. Some failed while others not only survived but thrived. Read on.
