Tips for choosing a lawyer:
* The best way to find a lawyer is by word of mouth or referrals. So ask around.
* Check referral lists of the Small Business Development and Technology Center at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, local chambers of commerce and trade associations.
* Give yourself plenty of time to plan, prepare and research.
* Select a few lawyers and do a thorough interview before hiring one.
* Make sure that the lawyer has a good track record of working with small businesses.
* Ask for references - and check them.
* Ask if the lawyer specializes in an area of law. Make sure their expertise suits your needs.
* Discuss fees in the first meeting. Get a clear explanation of charges and how bills will be paid.
