New Site To Match Niche Films, Viewers

The British Film Council gave a thumbs-up to the launch of a Web site developers said should expand movie-goers’ appreciation for non-mainstream films.
The community and social networking site Myfilms.com, launching next month, will be supported through lottery funding and backed by media and entertainment companies such as Sky, IPC Media, Lovefilm.com and Carlton Screen Advertising.
The aim is to increase the range and breadth of cinema-going in the U.K. It is extremely difficult getting anything other than blockbusters known in media such as papers or magazines – even movie-focused Web sites take a strong blockbuster-led approach. The site will combine film information and reviews with a sophisticated recommendation engine that matches movies to users tastes.
Web sites like the International Movie Database or commercially focused Empire Magazine are great for film buffs, said Tom Beaumont-Griffin, creator of the Myfilms concept, but what we are creating is a place where you don’t have to be a buff to have a rich mix of films and move beyond the restricted diet most people watch.
