An Exciting Niche Market For Farmers
Soybean production could provide a significant boost to the income of Island farmers.

The Guardian:
It’s encouraging that some Island farmers appear to be following the lead of one of their colleagues and looking into the potential of soybean production. It’s a niche that could pay off for Island producers.
Potato grower Robert MacDonald of Montague has been growing soybeans and shipping them to Ontario for processing for the Japan market. The demand for soybeans is so popular, he says, that he’s been working with the Ontario processor to co-ordinate expanded efforts in this province. If more Island farmers got into growing soybeans as a rotational crop, he says, it would justify building a processing plant here. ‘The market is there, the contracts are in place and so is the business plan. Now we need a grower commitment and a banker who says yes.’
This sounds like a promising venture. Interested growers had the chance to inquire about this at a meeting earlier last week. And by some reports, an impressive number took that opportunity. Mr. MacDonald said he’ll know soon whether there’s enough of a commitment from producers to proceed with the plan.
Hopefully there will be. With heavy overhead and cost of production forcing many farmers into financial difficulty, a lucrative rotational crop like soybeans could provide a much-needed source of income.
