The business community in Johor Baharu have been told not to fear starting business in the Iskandar Development Region (IDR) as there would be huge returns from their investment.

Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PNS) chairman Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said business prospects in the area were bright as the development concept was not new and it could turn Johor Baharu into a second Klang Valley.

‘Entrepreneurs should understand that it is the same as the development concepts of the Johor Tenggara Regional Development Authority (Kejora), Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) and South Kelantan Regional Development Authority (Kesedar). The only difference is that south Johor is already a developing urban area,’ he said when opening a seminar on franchising and business matching for the Graduates Franchise Programme and Women’s Franchise Programme organised by PNS.

Shahrir also advised Malay businessmen in Johor to understand the government’s plans and programmes so that they would not be left behind.

‘They (Johor Malays) must be aggressive. They are not new in the field as they have been doing business with Singaporeans and Indonesians for a long time. Therefore, they must not fear doing business with anyone,’ he said.

Shahrir also said that PNS planned to create 200 franchisees this year and the number to be increased to 1,000 by 2010.
