Green Niche: Entrepreneur Looks To Save The World One Wedding At A Time

Maryland Daily Record:
Baltimore wedding planner Cate Buscher is on a crusade to save the world.

Okay, she is smart enough to know that she’s not going to single-handedly save the planet, but she has figured out how to do her part and make a few dollars in the process.

An avowed environmentalist, Buscher, owner of Plan It Perfect Inc., a wedding and event planning firm, is trying to add an environmentally conscious slant to weddings and has added a new division to her company, Plan It Green.

Weddings, she said, ‘are incredibly wasteful.’

Climate Care, a British environmental group trying reducing greenhouse gases, estimates that the average wedding uses up to 14.5 tons of carbon dioxide. Spokesman Michael Buick said it is impossible to quantify an exact amount, but they reached that number based on average emissions.

Buscher said that in order to cut back on the pollutants emitted, weddings need to be planned using values that are environmentally friendly.

Her goal is to host events that are completely green, but for now she’d be satisfied for introducing environmental elements a bit at a time. She said that you can incorporate even minute details into a ceremony and cut back on waste without compromising on the aesthetics. ‘It can be as easy as using recycled paper for your invitations or finding an organic caterer or setting tables with cloth napkins as opposed to paper napkins or hiring an acoustic musician,’ she said.

She also recommends planning honeymoons that don’t require a great deal of traveling, purchasing carbon offsets and using bridesmaids’ dresses that can be worn again.

The idea, she said, is to strike a balance between ‘earth friendly and stylish.’ More.
