New Site Allows Citizens To Shop For Insurance

The Boston Channel:
The state panel overseeing an ambitious new health care law is launching a new Web site that lets citizens shop and compare different lower cost plans created by the law.

Under the law, virtually everyone in Massachusetts must have health insurance by July 1. Those making less than 3 times the federal poverty level of $10,210 for an individual are eligible for free or subsidized care.

Those making more and not currently covered by their employers are required to buy insurance on their own or face tax penalties.

As part of the law, the state negotiated with insurance companies to come up with private, lower cost plans.

Residents can visit the new Web site www.MAhealthconnector.org to compare different plans, including premiums, co-pays, deductibles and maximum out-of-pocket expenses. The plans typically come in bronze, silver and gold plans, with increasing levels of coverage and higher premiums.

Visitors can scrutinize each plan individually, as well as view side-by-side comparisons before choosing a plan.

A 45-year-old truck driver living in Boston, for example, could end up spending between $226 and $610, a month depending on the level of benefits sought.

The Web site also allows uninsured residents to sign up immediately once they’ve made their choice.
