Kankakee Daily Journal:
Following his 38-year career with Illinois Bell and the names it went through following utility deregulation, Bourbonnais’ Steve Overright knew he had to find something to do to keep himself occupied.

He found it walking through the hedgerows that are in good supply in this area.

What the 58-year-old man found were sticks that can be transformed into beautiful walking sticks or canes. If you want something to do, you just have to know where to look.

He has been transforming these pieces of wood into works of art for the past 18 months and he is selling the finished canes and walking sticks at Momence’s Island Park, at the flea market that is held during the city’s Gladiolus Festival.

The flea market continues from noon to 3 p.m. today.

The walking sticks and canes can be as inexpensive as $10, but the majority of them are priced from $35 and up.

This new venture for Overright began quite accidentally.
