Entrepreneur Grabs Niche

The Coloradoan:
A self-proclaimed ‘tarp nerd’ and avid camper, Brian Combes was tired of wind gusts destroying his campsites.
So he went to work finding a better way to secure tents, tarps and other materials. It took him 2 hours and a little tinkering with some PVC pipe to come up with the idea of the EZ Grabbit. It’s a sturdy plastic device used to secure tarps and other materials to structures or fasten tarps together.
A few weeks after showing the product to his brother, Combes took the idea to market.
The epiphany in the workshop 10 years ago led to a product that is expected to generate $750,000 in revenue this year. It can be found in local hardware stores as well as at corporate giant Home Depot, which carries the EZ Grabbit in nearly all of its 1,900 stores and even put its seal of approval on it.
The gadget has gone international, with retailers in Australia, New Zealand and Canada carrying it.
‘It was a million miles away from my thoughts,’ Combes said of the idea of marketing the invention and making a business of it, which he incorporated in September 2001. ‘I just wanted my camping trips to be a little better.’
