The first time Kathy Moskal launched a business, she created a whole new product category.
Her company, Hue, manufactured hip alternatives to hosiery - colored tights, and knee-highs to wear with pants - and garmentos coined the term ‘fashion legwear.’ The company’s sales reached $40 million, and Moskal made a bundle when she and a co-owner sold.
After a decade of retirement, Moskal started another business, Veré, and once again is creating something new: gourmet chocolate. Healthy gourmet chocolate.
The handmade treats contain so little sugar that a diabetic can eat them. A serving has less sugar than an apple, more fiber than a piece of whole wheat bread and more antioxidants than two pounds of broccoli.
All the products are made of dark chocolate with 75% cocoa content and are gluten-free. Most are lactose-free. Even better: studies show dark chocolate promotes lower blood pressure and reduced cholesterol.
Tasty treats for health-conscious chocoholics sounds like a slam dunk. But it turned out to be harder to get her products on store shelves than Moskal expected.
‘I was totally unprepared for the slow pace of the food business - it’s the complete opposite of fashion,’ she said at her Chelsea factory on W. 27th St. As she spoke, Erika Erskine, a chocolatier trained at culinary school Le Cordon Bleu in London, and 3 cooks baked tiny brownies and coated them with chocolate.
