Sweet 16 for Theira Ziegler of Uniondale, Long Island is more than a themed birthday party, or the onset of boy-craziness that girls her age typically experience.
With the help of her mom Gail Slaughter, she has managed to turn her prized ‘teenship’ into a profitable enterprise: Theira Ziegler’s Delicious Deserts, comprised of all natural mouthwatering oatmeal raisin, white chocolate chip and chocolate chip with walnuts cookies and heavenly chocolate fudge brownies.
Ziegler’s deserts are presently sold in more than a half-dozen stores in Long Island including: Mike’s in Westbury; Catered Rose, Main Street Mini Market in Hempstead, The Bagel Stop, the Amoco Gas Station in New Hyde Park and at Jerusalem Food Market in Uniondale.
Theira says she got her start when her mom started baking cookies and brownies as deserts for friends and co-workers as a gesture of love. The recipe for Ziegler’s goods was passed down from her great-grand mother, Sally Cole Slaughter.
Mom and daughter’s schedule for baking begins around 5 p.m. on Fridays, and they don’t stop until the wee hours in the morning. They’ve grown from making 100 cookies a week to 500 cookies. On Mondays, they make their deliveries, selling out very quickly.
Theira says she’s fortunate to have a devoted staff of supporters to help out. Overseer Tony Nixon handles label and bagging along with Taysha Harrison and Evelyn Allen, while Denise Benes does bookkeeping er and Donna Winfield acts as business manager.
