Female Entrepreneurs Find Niche In County

Leesburg Today:
Cheryl Harris, owner of Conscious Creations, found her business because she wanted to help others. After more than 10 years in corporate America, she looked for a job that would make her feel fulfilled. ‘I worked my way up from secretary to contracts manager,’ she recalled. ‘I reached a point where I looked after all aspects of the business. Something was missing. In talking to other women, they were saying the same thing.’

In early 2001, the best thing happened to Harris; laid off, she decided to take the summer off and discover what she truly wanted to do. She believes if she didn’t get fired, she may not have ever started her coaching business in 2002.

She discovered that she loved to connect to people in such a way that would help them get to another place.

‘People said, ‘you would be a great coach,” she said.

Harris‘ classes at Coach For Life, a school in San Diego, CA, began just one week after 9/11. Symbolic of the courage she exemplified during that time in her life, she had debated not flying.

‘I’m so glad I got on that plane and broke through the fear,’ she said.

A nonreligious, spiritually based accredited school, she learned how to harness compassion to coach professionals. Other schools focus more on the analytical side of coaching. However, Harris already had a business background and sought to round out her skills. The training consisted of learning how to coach and create your own business.

‘The root of my business is compassion,’ she said.

Harris has always been an entrepreneur. As a child, she sold greeting cards to neighbors. In her preteen years, she would set up her yard sales near the exit of a local ball field to maximize sales. It seemed a natural progression to start her own business, she said.
