Student Turns Boredom Into Jewelry Business

Sushi rolls, strawberries, lemon chiffon cake, apples, Zodiac creatures, letters of the alphabet and Nintendo mushrooms. Junior Alyssa Burton is the creator of these miniature charms which she molds, hand paints and fastens to jewelry and cell phone key-chains.
What began as a cure for boredom has morphed into gifts for friends and a small business complete with a Facebook group and a Web site of its own: Smiley Charms.
‘I was bored at home and I wanted something to do,’ Burton said. ‘I like to doodle, so I took my designs and turned them into tiny charms with clay that I found in the house.’
Although Burton has never taken an art class, she is no stranger to art. She attributes her talents to her family’s involvement in the arts.
‘My grandmother is a seamstress and my mother is a dance choreographer and does beading when she finds the time,’ Burton said. ‘I was always interested in art in all its forms, even at a young age.’
Burton, who has been deeply involved in dance since the age of 3, belongs to Palo Alto High School’s Dance Team and is training in almost all forms of dance including jazz, ballet, tap, hip-hop and contemporary dance. ‘Everything but ballroom dancing,’ Burton said…
