Bizjournals:
For Entrepreneurs
The No. 1 gift entrepreneurs want for Christmas 2007 is a list with the names and addresses of all the investors who purchased subprime loans. Let’s face it, investors who bought mortgage-backed securities supported by borrowers with few assets and low incomes are an entrepreneur’s dream come true.
These types of investors are always prime suspects in the game of finding people to pump money into startup companies, which usually have no assets and no revenue. Why didn’t all entrepreneurs just call their deals subprime investments and rake in the cash? Venture capitalists, look out! You can be replaced by subprime investors.
For Venture Capital Investors
For venture capitalists, how about initial public offerings for a few of their portfolio companies? If every store at the mall is fresh out of IPOs, then how about a big juicy portfolio company acquisition? Any exit that boosts internal rates of return will be especially welcome by venture capitalists seeking to raise a new venture fund during 2008.
Likewise, VCs also really crave a defined direction for the investment herd. They don’t necessarily make more money, but it gives them comfort. It gives the lead cows hope they can get out at high multiples before the rest of the herd catches up. The cows in the rear start salivating when they see the lead cows make their profits. Of course, they’re close to the slaughter house at that point, but as they say, ‘Misery loves company.’
For Energy Entrepreneurs
For energy entrepreneurs, how about $100 per barrel oil? At that price, even the most uncompetitive and unreliable energy sources become price competitive - wind, solar, oxen …
Oops! I guess that present is already under the Christmas tree. Well, not all presents have to be surprises.
For Teenage Entrepreneurs
The gift every teenage Internet entrepreneur wants is hearing Mom yell upstairs, ‘Get off the phone with that no account Billy Gates. Google is downstairs with a big bag of cash. They’re ready talk deal.’
