Chippewa Herald:
The little card table set up this past summer at the corner of County X and 188th Street didn’t look like much of a business, but it was noticeable. Clipping by on the busiest county road in Chippewa County, drivers could catch a glimpse of a few vegetables on the table, a sign naming some prices, and a box for money.
Self-service vegetable stands are not uncommon in these parts in late summer and early fall. I noticed this one quite a bit. Living on 189th Street, when I came down our road and turned west toward town, it was often there right in front of me. I sometimes wondered how many people actually stopped and made a purchase.
Fast forward to Thanksgiving Day. Driving my mother back to her apartment after sharing the feast with us, I turned that same corner and it was lit up like a hundred Christmas trees. The vegetable stand was a distant memory by then. I made no connection, until last week.
‘People were saying, I’m going to put you in the paper!‘ said Dustin Schuh, 11, who was not all that surprised that I called his family for an appointment. His neighbors and family knew of the connection and one of them called the Herald, as promised.
That little vegetable stand was Dustin’s. He worked the garden all summer, sold the produce, then took a substantial portion of the impressive profits and bought Christmas decorations. He designed the display himself and put up most of it, unless it involved heights his mother, Dawn, wouldn’t allow. Then his dad, Dennis, helped out.
Parents with kids in this age range, who barely show enough ambition to pick up their socks, can only marvel at Dustin. He’s got a plan and long-range goals, and the fruits of it all are there for us all to enjoy this holiday season.
‘I just like decorating and all,’ he said. Read full story.
