Fishing Enthusiast Turns Hobby Into Business

For Pinconning resident Alan Piechowiak, fishing has always been his passion. So it made sense to take his knowledge of the sport and mix it with business.

In 2004, Piechowiak and his business partner, Kelly Curnutt, took ideas Curnutt learned at a walleye seminar and created B A Outfitters.

The company manufactures and distributes a fishing crawler harness and salmon fly storage device called the Tackle Tube.

“It’s definitely a seasonal product,” said Piechowiak , who puts the tubes together himself. “I work full time at another job, so the downturn of business doesn’t affect me. During the winter I prepare for the run.”

The Tackle Tube keeps up to six crawler harnesses or salmon flies neatly organized in a tube-shaped container. The foam insert, with deep grooves, keeps them securely in place and eliminates exposed hooks. The clear tube allows the angler to select the proper color harness without removing it from the case, while several different cap colors are available to provide quick identification of different harness colors or lengths.

“It’s a step ahead of anything else and outsells its competitors three to one,” Piechowiak said.
