Before you charge off and starting creating a website, getting programmers and help with writing copy, all with dollar signs in your eyes, consider taking a little extra time to plan and do research. One of the things internet business newbies frequently do is to run off into a bunch of different directions that don’t produce the kind of business success you desire. So often what happens is you see others succeeding, making what looks to be easy money, and you might feel the urge to charge in. Take a moment and relax. Spending a little extra time now can save you a lot of headaches later, and can help you get to earning money faster.

It may be helpful to consider that each stage of building your online business is like a little world all by itself. Choosing a profitable niche is its own world with rules, jargon and practices that are more or less effective. Once your site is built and you’re looking to drive traffic, there is another world of language an ideas that you’ll find yourself in. You don’t have to know everything, but being informed can make a difference.

For now, however, we’re interested in getting started with choosing a profitable niche.

Start with making a list of topics you have an interest in. Write it all down. Nothing is too silly to consider. If you can’t think of anything right off, consider looking at a news paper. Where does your attention go, what are you naturally drawn to? What do you spend time reading. Also try looking at the yellow pages for inspiration. The first step is to get a niche. You should be focused on a sub topic that is more specific so that you can achieve a higher ranking on the search engine results and thus to bring more targeted traffic to your Adsense niche blog easier. By concentrating on a niche you can lower the competition against other internet marketers and it is less hassle in making money online.

The second step is, upon deciding a niche for your blog, you need to do a keyword research. You should select 2 to 4 long tailed keyword phrases and search for the number of competitions from the major search engines. A competition of less than 1 million is preferred as it is much easier for you to optimize your blog.

Next, you search for the amount of money that the advertisers are likely to pay for that keyword phrases.

This is important as you are going to earn from the clicks that you receive from your visitors. So, the higher rate per click ads being display on your blog, the more money you can make.

The third step is setting your Adsense niche blog by registering with a free blog provider such as blogger and wordpress. These blog providers have a feature where you can insert your Adsense ads automatically on your blog.

However, before you can insert your Adsense ads, you need to complete this final step first which is to register with Google Adsense account and get your unique Google Adsense Publisher ID.

The economy may be suffering, but for a host of business owners and entrepreneurs out there, there are no excuses.

This is a time for innovation, progress and hard work – even if they are college students.

Greeley is becoming a hotbed of business ideas as students try their hands at the business world, be it opening bars, running Web sites, painting houses, or simply finding a niche in an otherwise stagnant market. More important, students are learning to navigate a business world in some of the worst economic times, making their own way rather than counting on someone else to do it.

“I don’t want to work for an hourly wage,” said Greg Farnsworth, a senior at the University of Colorado who recently opened the long-awaited Patrick’s Irish Pub in downtown Greeley. “You have all these business ideas and never start them.

“Finally, I said I have to stop making excuses. I’ve got to do this.”

College is the perfect time for students to try their hands at business, said Dave Thomas, an assistant professor of management at the Monfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado. The college offers an entrepreneurship certificate to its business majors, but it will soon offer an entrepreneurship minor for all students at UNC – the first in the state to do so.

“The beauty of doing it in college is you’re not risking a lot,” Thomas said. “They use the coursework to learn how to start a business. They’re using the time to start out their idea. The point is, the idea is tested in a college setting, where there was not much risk, they have access to great resources and a platform to connect with (the business) network… A lot of students don’t want to go to work for a big corporation and get laid off when they’re 40.”

Sara Rigney, a freshman at UNC, is starting early. For her, the learning starts now while she’s working through her general studies. She recently signed on with College Works, a franchised house painting network, in which she’ll operate her own house painting business during the summer. She hopes to create a $60,000 business, organizing crews to paint houses throughout Arvada, her home town.

Innovators don’t invent all by themselves: To paraphrase Isaac Newton, great inventors see further than others because they stand on the shoulders of giants.

Researchers at the Center for Technology Assessment hope to use that insight to clear out the enormous blacklog of U.S. patent applications, which is stifling American innovation simply because inventors must wait so long to get their patents approved and be assured of their intellectual property.

They argue that a social network for patents—which allows select volunteers to discuss patents and group analogous innovations—could greatly simplify the patent office’s most onerous task: Identifying so-called “prior art”—all the other inventions that inform and compete with any supposed new idea.

Already, the researchers have launched the “Peer-to-Patent” pilot project, outlined in the upcoming issue of the International Journal of Technology Transfer and Commercialisation. Similar experiments are underway in Britian and Europe.

While newspapers throughout North America struggle with declining revenues, a Chicago entrepreneur plans to launch a new newspaper that reprints blogs in print format.

The first issues of The Printed Blog are to go on sale Tuesday in Chicago and San Francisco.

The three-page, full-colour newspaper will consist exclusively of online content from over 300 local and national blogs. The plan is to publish an a.m. and a p.m. edition daily and distribute the papers at high-traffic locations such as subway stations.

The paper is the brainchild of Joshua Karp, a former software entrepreneur and an avowed lover of the printed word, He says he plans to present a mix of national and local blogs, on both news and current affairs and personal topics.

“I think that there is a strong and rich tradition of people who read the newspaper and people enjoy the process of getting it and going through it, and I don’t think it will go away,” Karp told CBC’s Q cultural affairs show.

“Our primary difference is that we’re pulling from a well of content online. We have bloggers that write on every conceivable topic who have offered to move up to the paper,” he said in an interview aired Monday.

So while traditional newspapers are rushing to boost their online content, The Printed Blog will take what’s online and make it available to the person who likes to have reading material he or she can hold onto.

Newlyweds Dan and Janet Rush were simply continuing a family-business tradition when they bought a third of an acre in south Phoenix nearly 20 years ago to open a junkyard.

A born entrepreneur, Dan Rush was soon developing additional sites to expand the ways he could meet customers’ needs.

JSL Management now holds more than 50 acres throughout metropolitan Phoenix, managing 21 recycling locations and processing about 1,000 vehicles a month, he said.

“I think around 95 percent of a vehicle can be recycled,” said Chief Operating Officer Layla Ressler, including .the parts, the tires, and recyclable metals.

The Rush’s niece, Ressler also grew up “in the business,” with family dinners and events dominated by junkyard recycling tales.

Still, armed with degrees in marketing from Northern Arizona and Arizona State universities, she spent several years forging an “outside” career. Continue reading.

On a Wednesday afternoon in late December, the average wait to sell clothing at Buffalo Exchange, a Manhattan consignment shop, was about 25 minutes. Beyond the front counter, where the consignors sought pocket cash and tax deductions, nearly a dozen shoppers squeezed themselves between overstuffed racks in the 450-square-foot space, seeking bargains amid used designer jeans and last season’s cashmere sweaters.

“You should see this place on weekends,” said the store’s assistant manager. “The lines get to be at least 10 people deep.”

The month-old shop, which already possesses the slight musty smell typical to thrift stores, is the first Manhattan location for Buffalo, a Tucson-based secondhand-clothes retail chain with 34 stores across the nation. The new store’s crowds are indicative of both Buffalo Exchange’s continuing success – the privately held company says it has $50 million in annual revenue and is concluding its third consecutive year of sales growth – and also of the resale market’s overall performance. Secondhand shops are a bright spot in today’s downtrodden retail industry.

“We do real well in economic downturns,” said Kerstin Block, 66, who founded Buffalo 34 years ago with her husband. “I think that people are more willing to sell their clothes when the economy’s bad, and they’re more likely to shop in used-goods stores. It’s less expensive.”

In what’s supposed to be the busiest time of year for department stores and retailers, the National Retail Federation reports that clothing stores’ sales are down more than 7% over the previous year. ShopperTrak, a research firm that charts foot traffic at the nation’s malls, says that holiday crowds are down by about 10% since last year and that overall sales this season will only increase by about 0.1%.

“People can’t afford to buy as much these days at the regular retail channels,” said Jeff Van Sinderen, a senior retail analyst at B. Riley, a Los Angeles research and investment firm. “Consumers are looking for extreme values.” Read more.
